Toyota starts work on introducing Daihatsu cars in India

Toyota Motor Corp and Daihatsu Motor will begin talks to build and sell small cars in India this week. Toyota has said that it wishes to double its share of the passenger vehicle market in the country to 10 percent by 2025.
According to the company, Daihatsu`s small cars will be key to achieving this goal. To fight in the small car market we need more support from Daihatsu. Toyota by ourselves cannot develop it.
Toyota has, till now, been unable to make a mark in the small car segment in India. A Toyota official said that the decision to being Daihatsu cars to India will be made by the end of this year. In a market like India there is still need for small cars. As soon as possible I would like to introduce that small car, he said. Toyota would also need to consider the Indian government`s policy on safety and environmental issues before deciding which models to launch and when, he said.
The official said, Toyota can spare about half, or 100,000 units a year, of manufacturing capacity.
