J.K. Tripathy, a 1985-batch officer of the Indian Police Service, took charge as the new Commissioner of Police, Chennai. He replaced T. Rajendran posted as Additional Director-General of Police (Prisons), Chennai.
Speaking to reporters after assuming charge, Mr Tripathy promised to accord top priority to maintaining law and order in the city. �As chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has said, maintenance of law and order will be top priority. We will deal with rowdyism with an iron hand,� he said.
�The Chennai City police force is geared up and prepared to face any challenge to ensuring that law and order is maintained in the city,� Mr Tripathy added.
�The police force will ensure that people do not fear crime and accord priority to the safety of schoolchildren and the elderly,� the new commissioner said.
