Heavy rain on Sunday brings city to a standstill

Sunday saw the city receiving 31.5 mm of rainfall in the morning hours from 8.30 to 11.30. Water bodies in Ambattur and Tambaram breached their banks, marooning almost 80 people living in surrounding areas. Many were rescued by boats.
Water rushed into many houses in the south of the city. Residents were seen protesting on the streets in various places. Residents of Madipakkam protested against the Corporation for not paying attention to their problems.
Public transport was hit across the city. The water was too deep for auto rickshaws to run. Taxis were unavailable and suburban trains were delayed or cancelled.
The government has said that all schools and colleges in the city were to be closed on Monday. Exams of the Anna and Madras Universities have been postponed until further notice.
