Rain will continue till Tuesday, say experts

The rain will continue till Tuesday, the Meteorological Dept. has said. Chennai had been left paralysed after relentless rain on Friday, that caused flooding in several areas in the city. Puzhal recorded the highest amount of rainfall received at 21 cm. Nungambakkam weather station recorded 15 cm and Meenambakkam weather station recorded 12 cm.

The Kavarapalayam lake in on the Chennai Tiruvallur High Road in Avadi has been breached, flooding houses nearby. The city`s reservoirs have received between 8 and 21 cm of rain. Chembarambakkam reservoir is one thirds full. As on Friday, the city`s four reservoirs showed water storage of 3,236 million cubic feet. 

The meteorological department has said that the city will receive moderate to heavy rainfall till Tuesday. The northeast monsoon rainfall did not need any weather systems to bring rain. It is normal for Chennai to get over 15 cm of rain in a single day during the northeast monsoon. In 2009, Chennai received over 40 cm of rain in November, said Former Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Y.E.A. Raj.
