Apple to cut down greenhouse gas emission in China

Posted on: 22/Oct/2015 11:01:54 AM
Apple Inc. is reorganising their activities to reduce air pollution in China. Millions of iPads and iPhones are assembled in the country and the factories have caused a large amount of pollution as a result. The company is looking to producing 2.2 gigawatts of renewable energy including solar power. Apple made an announcement on Wednesday to the effect. The world`s most valuable company has been trying to cut down its carbon footprints across the world.

According to Apple, if its suppliers shift to renewable energy for manufacturing, 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gases can be avoided by 2020. Foxconn  has pledged 400 megawatts of solar energy as its contribution to the 2 gigabyte goal. Foxconn runs the factory in which most of the iPhones are assembled.

Speaking about the commitment, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, Climate change is one of the great challenges of our time, and the time for action is now. The transition to a new green economy requires innovation, ambition and purpose. Environment activists have welcomed the move. An official of Greenpeace said, When you look at all the air pollution in China, all the manufacturing that is done there has a lot to do with it, so this is a significant step in the right direction.
