IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) has announced that e-catering facility is being introduced in the 1st phase in 45 Major Railway Stations.
Taking food remains one of the main issues for train passengers. When the passenger does not get his preferred food item, he/she has to go without food.
Keeping this in mind and addressing this issue, an announcement was made during the last Railway Budget that e-catering facility will be introduced in 108 important railway stations.
IRCTC is taking the responsibility for introducing this e-catering facility. In the first phase of implementation, e-catering is being introduced on a trial basis in 45 major railway stations including New Delhi, Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Madurai, Mumbai, Howrah, Guwahati, Allahabad, Kanpur Central, Lucknow, Varanasi, Thiruvananthapuram Central, Chandigarh, Tirupathi, Vijayawada, Ernakulam, Surat, and Ahmedabad.

When enquiring with IRCTC higher officials, they explained that the e-catering service being introduced will function on a trial basis until March 2016.
Passengers can renter their PNR number and order 10 different food items � idli, dosai, chapathi, biriyani varieties, full meals, pizza, and bakery items.
Railways has now entered into a contract agreement with 6 private agencies for this facility for catering these 10 food items. The number of items on offer will be increased gradually.
The ordered food items will reach the entered railway station within 2 hours after order placement. Payment can be made online.
The prices of the items will be same as the rate sold outside. If the order is cancelled, the relevant amount will be credited to the savings bank account of the passenger in 2 or 3 days.
