Microsoft`s audio lab has been declared the quietest place in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records. The chamber is house in Building 87 at Microsofts Redmond, Washington campus. The sound level measure at -20.3 decibels!
-20.3 decibels is around the level of sound air molecules make when bouncing off each other. The quietest place is space, but space does not have air to propagate sound. The previous record was held by Orfield Laboratories in Minneapolis with a sound level of -13 decibels.
The chambers at Microsoft are called anechoic chambers. These are lined with sound absorbers. The absorbers take any vibration in the air and dampen it. The chambers are separated from the rest of the buildings. These chambers are used to test equipment for noise levels.
