Braking systems to be made compulsory for two wheelers

Posted on: 23/Sep/2015 11:42:08 AM
Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) for all two wheelers that have 125cc engines and above will be compulsory. The Combined Braking System (CBS) will be compulsory for two wheelers below 125 cc engines. The Road Safety Ministry has issued April 2017 as the deadline for the measure. Existing two wheelers have until 2018 to comply with the regulation.

So what are ABS and CBS? ABS helps prevent locking of the wheels when braking. Optimum braking pressure is applied using sensors. The technology helps reduce the occurrence of falls while maintaining better stability. CBS is also called the Linked Braking System (LBS). This technology links the rear and front brakes. Two wheelers such as the Honda Active have this technology that was developed for races in the 1970s.

Experts have welcomed the regulation in light of increased accidents involving two wheelers. 32,524 people died in road accidents and 1.27 lakh people were injured in the last year.
