As there is no water supply to lakes in Chennai including Poondi, Puzhal, Sembarambakkam, and Sozhavaram lakes, all of them are found dried out! The Sozhavaram lake comprising a capacity of 881 million cubic feet has been dry for the past two months. In the Poondi lake which has capacity of 3231 million cubic feet, water is available only up to 54 million cubic feet. This scenario of dried out lakes is due to non-availability of Krishna water.
The Puzhal lake has water just 170 million cubic feet whereas its total capacity is 3300 million cubic feet. The total capacity of Sembarambakkam lake is 3645 million cubic feet, but currently it just has 212 million cubic feet of water.
On the whole, the total volume of water in all the four lakes comprise of 436 million cubic feet. The same was 2408 million cubic feet last year, to note. These lakes in Chennai are totally dried out unlike the scenario in the past thirty years!
As of now, the water supply for Chennai is obtained from the Veeranam lake. This lake which has a capacity of 47.50 has about 44.50 feet of water. This lake receives about 200 feet of water every day and today, it received 90 feet of water. This provides Chennai with 72 cubic feet water every day.
The total water supply required in Chennai is 834 million litre. However, just 560 million litre water is received in the city. Further, 100 million litre of water is obtained from sea water purification plant.
