Sony Xperia to be assembled in India

Sony Corporation is all set to assemble its Xperia smartphones in India. They will also manufacture a few cheaper models that have been designed for the local market. They are looking to tie up with Taiwan�s Foxconn to assemble the phone. According to sources, the first batch of the phones will roll out later this year.
The Indian market for smartphones is the fourth largest in the world, followed by US, China and Japan; but will be the second largest by 2017. Sony is looking to boost sales of mobile phone in the country and, so, increase revenues in the promising market conditions.
Initially, Sony had decided not to pursue the entry level smartphone segment. But 70% of industry sales come from here, causing the company to change its policies. The manufacturers will also get a duty benefit of 6 to 6.5%, as part of Prime Minister Modi�s �Make in India� initiative.
