In a move to remove silt from drains across the city, the Chennai Corporation will hire super sucker machines. The Corporation has made the decision to hire 25 such machines before the monsoon sets in.
Officials say, (We have) already issued work order to purchase 10 sucker machines to de-silt storm water drains without deploying men to manually clean it... It`s difficult to purchase more super sucker machines in a short time. So we have decided to hire such machines to complete de-silting work in three months... (We are) planning to remove at least 3.4 tonnes of silt every day from the drains.
The Madras High Court had recently advised the Corporation to ban manual scavenging. This has made contractors reluctant to take up the job of desilting. However, there is a shortage of machines which leads to hiring manual labour to clean the drains.
