Online IT returns filing shows growing numbers

The Income Tax (IT) Department had launched a new e-filing system last month. Reports show that this OTP based Income Tax Returns (ITR) filing system has filed over 7.5 lakh returns. This links more than 11 lakh Aadhaar numbers with a PAN card. This online payment option allows users to use Aadhaar number, internet banking, ATM or email. Till now, tax payers had to send a paper acknowledgement to the IT office in Bengaluru.
Data from the last month shows that the portal has verified 753677 ITRs. Those using Aadhaar numbers with PAN cards amount to 1146581. The time period for filing IT returns has been extended to August 31st this year. With that in mind, more than 15 lakh e- verified returns are expected.
This online portal can be accessed at https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.
A person who has an annual income of Rs. 5 lakhs or less and has no refund claims can generate an Electronic Verification Code (EVC). This will enable the user to file and validate their returns online. They will also need a registered mobile number and email ID. This process eliminates the usage of paper completely. Those who have internet banking can also activate their account. Once registered, the EVC will be sent to the user`s registered mobile number.
