What is the main function of helmet?
- If a person weighing 80 kg falls from height of 1 meter, in an accident, he will fall at a speed of 800 km.
- If he falls from height of 2 meters, he will then fall at a speed of 16000 km!
- This sort of high speed cannot certainly be borne or taken by our bare heads
- Even attacked at a speed of 800 km, our skull will get broken!
- This will affect the neurons in the brains leading to death.
- Here only comes helmet to serve its function – even if a person falls at much more terrific speeds, the helmet worn by the person will protect the head!
- In order to withstand such high speeds, helmets should meet certain standards of quality.
What is ISI?
- All helmets manufactured in India must get certified by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) for quality.
- The rules & regulations of the quality of a helmet comes under the section IS 4151 of BSI.
- A high quality plastic material known as ABS should be used in the upper body/part of the helmet. High density thermocol must be filled within this plastic material.
- The regulation also stipulates the requirement of features like the quantity of chin-strap, its locking arrangement, and how it should suitable fit inside the head..
- These helmets will bear the seal of ISI & the symbol IS41511..
- However, some companies use cement, paper paste, etc to make helmets and sell them in the market.
- Instead of the high density thermocol to be used, they use low density thermocol.
- Such helmets will not certainly protect the head in the event of accident.
How to select?
- Select the helmet that perfectly fits your head!
- If it is very loose, the helmet itself may hit the head in the event of an accident!
- Avoid helmets with conical and square shapes!
- Only spherical or round-shaped helmets offer perfect protection from accidents.

- Failing to tie the strap when wearing the helmet will make the helmet slip & fall.
- Hence leave a gap which will permit insertion of 1/2fingers. And tie the strap.
- Ensure that it securely locked and would not loosen!
