Chennai Corporation Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy said that Chennaites involved in legal battles in the division of their ancestral property and get such plots can now build houses here, even if the land area measures less than 80 sq mt. (861.11 sq. ft.).
So far, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) had permitted the Chennai Corporation to approve land that measures only above 80 sq. mt. The relaxation of the norm will allow these plots to be used for residential development in the detached areas (peripheral areas) in the city. And the norms would be restricted to plots that are availed of through family partition, court cases and demonstrable hardships.
Any person can approach the Chennai Corporation with a land that measure less than 860 sq. ft. with necessary documents to show why he/she requires the relaxation. A separate committee will decide the relaxation of the norms.
