Today, the 30th of June will be a lengthier day than usual. The extension of time period will be one second. The change in time due to the slow rotation of earth is matched by adding one more second to the day and this second is called the leap second. The information was announced by NASA.
The rotation of earth is steadily decreasing. In general, a day comprises of 86,400 seconds. In the year 1820, a day had precisely 24 hours. Owing to reasons like warming of earth, sun, moon, gravity, waves in sea, etc, the rotation of earth is constantly reducing. This has increased the length of one day to 86,400.0002 seconds which means a day has extra of 2 milli seconds or extra by one in two thousandth of a second. This change is taking place throughout the year.
In order to match this increase in daily seconds, as these milliseconds accumulate to one full second, it is added to the day. This is usually done either on 30th of June or 31st of December.
Generally, after 23:59:59, the next day wilil begin. Today, on 30th of June, the leap second will be added.
