Sale of commercial LPG cylinders on rise

It has been reported that the sales of commercial gas cylinders have gone up by more than 15 per cent with an equivalent decrease in the sale of domestic cylinders. This is due to Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG (DBTL). Because of this scheme the leakage of subsidized gas cylinders has been curbed.

Earlier the 14.2 kg cylinders meant for commercial use were often diverted and sold through the black market allegedly for commercial use. This pilferage could not be tracked by oil marketing companies prior to the DBTL. But now, as the subsidy is directly transferred to consumers bank accounts, sale of each subsidized cylinder can be monitored, leading to reduction in diversion. So, there is a corresponding increase in the usage of commercial 19 kilogram cylinders that cost Rs. 1,320. Such cylinders are available over the counter as is the case with domestic connections.

DBTL, according to Indian Oil officials, has cut down on diversion of the domestic gas cylinders which is visible through figures. Around 88 percent of Tamil Nadus consumers have already registered with the scheme.
