RTO officials have been inspecting all the school buses throughout Tamil Nadu. RTO officials in Chennai who had undertaken the inspection have mentioned that they have cancelled the fitness certificate of 40 school buses temporarily. There are about 20 thousand school buses in Tamil Nadu. Because of constant accidents causing injuries to school children, the RTO officials have started inspecting the buses annually. Before the academic year 2015-16 commences, the RTO officials have to inspect all the buses and should submit a report to the concerned District Collector by 30th May.
As per this, Regional Transport Officials (RTO) have started inspecting school vehicles ferrying students across the city from May 11. The inspection will be conducted by a committee comprising RTOs, revenue officials, Assistant Commissioners of Police and Chief Education Officers. They will check for the condition of the vehicle, height of the foot board and presence of first-aid box, among others.
60 school buses were inspected in Kolathur area. Out of this, it was found that 20 buses did not follow the guidelines. Hence the fitness certificate has been cancelled. In the last two days, the fitness certificates for 40 buses have been cancelled.
One week�s time will be given to school authorities to rectify the defect. If they failed to rectify it, such vehicles will be impounded.
