In this, it was found that about 9 per cent families run by widows. In Tamil Nadu, about 12 per cent widows run the family. Similarly, the largest state of the country Uttar Pradesh has 7 per cent women taking care of their family.
According to the census taken in 2011, the overall population of India was 121 crore out of which 5.55 crore were widows. Out of this 2.23 crore widows take the responsibility of functioning the family. Tamil Nadu has 22,33000 widows, and Uttar Pradesh has 24,62000 widows.
Reason behind increased number of widows
The most important reason for the reason behind it is huge age difference between husband and wife. Men are married to women who are 5 to 10 years lesser in age. Hence, this leads to early death of the male which puts all the burden of running the family on the woman, according to census reports.
