Posted on: 03/Dec/2010 6:57:37 AM
Consequent to the announcement of proposed indefinite truckers` strike called by All India Motor Congress from Sunday midnight; transporters in Chennai have stopped booking of cargo meant for destinations beyond 1500 Kms from Chennai. The strike call is in demand of reduction of toll gate charges. The bookings of textiles, turmeric, chemicals, wood, pulses, fertilizers and steel consignments have been stopped as most of them are meant for places in North India. As it would normally take a week to transport goods to places like Delhi, the transporters preempt the trucks getting stuck midway as per R. Sugumar, president of the Confederation of Surface Transport, Tamil Nad. Likewise the transport of incoming goods such as Basmati rice, fruits, marbles and textiles have been suspended since Thursday. However the transporting of essential good such Milk , water have been exempted according to M. Vasudevan, Secretary of Confederation of Surface Transport, Tamil Nadu,  There is  a meeting of the transporters with government scheduled for Friday.
