2013 Reports from Norton say India ranks 23 in the total number of cyber crime activities like Ransomware, phishing or identity theft. Over 60 per cent of these are targeted towards individuals and nearly 11 per cent of them are ransomware.
According to Internet security threat report vol 19, the threat is increased by 500 per cent in the year 2014. Here are some of the practices that can help you stay protected from malwares.
Better understanding about ransomware:
Ransomware is a malware that targets computers for ransom. It either restricts the users access to their own computer by keeping its desktop locked or by encrypting their files. This then gives out ransom notes claiming itself to be FBI, police or other agents.
As known in common, these malwares enter your computers through spam mails. Mails of this kind look like normal ones and carry any attachment in most cases. Once its opened, it begins its malware activity. On the other hand, your computer may be affected through certain websites too.
- Make sure to install an anti-virus in your computer
- Keep all your software files up to date
- It is recommended to have back-up of files every now and then. This is an act of safety as it can help you retain your files even if there is any phishing activity found in your PC
- Download applications only from trusted sites and not from unknown ones
