Along with Mahatma Gandhi & Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru was one of the premier citizens of India who worked for the independence with grand visions on the welfare of the country.

Under Nehru`s leadership, the Congress emerged as a catch-all party, dominating national and state-level politics and winning consecutive elections in 1951, 1957, and 1962. He remained popular with the people of India in spite of political troubles in his final years and failure of leadership during the 1962 Sino-Indian War.

In India, his birthday is celebrated as Children`s Day.

Nehru can be called the architect of modern India.

In 1955 Nehru was awarded Bharat Ratna, India`s highest civilian honour.

Being one of the premier statesmen in the world, he has been honoured all over the world and commemorative stamps have been released by many countries. He also played a leading role in Non-alignment movement in an attempt to reduce the global tension during the cold war period.

He had great fondness for children and enjoyed their company. He was also a great author with his books achieving historic significance.
