Rains are expected during the next few days

Chennaites experienced a mild hailstorm in some parts of the city on Sunday. The rain brought down the temperature by 14�C. The day began bright but saw intermittent showers from evening. The temperature dropped to 27.4�C after reaching a maximum of 38�C. Weathermen said these short thunderstorms occur during evening and night, triggered by the heat and sea breeze. �The thunderstorms happened because of a combination of three factors -heat, unstable atmosphere and moisture,� said Met department director S R Ramanan.
Heavy spells in short intervals may be good news, but the infrastructure cannot handle the excess water. Most roads, especially in Velachery , Besant Nagar and Santhome, were flooded as storm water drains are unable to carry the excess water.
Rains are expected during the next few days too. There was a heat wave-like situation in the city in the last ten days that caused concern and it was predicted that there would be a thunderstorm during the weekend.
