Posted on: 06/May/2014 9:42:10 AM
The mercury was rising and people of Chennai had already started facing the wrath of the hot sun. As a surprise, some localities received light rain, other parts experienced heavy showers with strong winds. Since Sunday evening, the core city recorded 0.9cm of rain while the suburbs registered slightly more, 1.3cm.   The showers created a record by reducing the maximum temperature on Monday to 31C, the lowest in two months. Despite the relative humidity being a high 95%, it was a cool day.

In the suburbs, the maximum temperature was 31.8C, two degrees below the normal temperature for the period, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Nungambakkam. The minimum temperature hovered around 24C, around three degrees below normal.

Thanks to the low pressure formed near Sri Lanka, the city will enjoy isolated showers for two more days. While the southern parts of the state will continue to experience heavy showers, the intensity of showers will reduce in the northern parts including Chennai, said the met department.
