4 units from Mettur & North Chennai and 1 unit from Neiveli are down and there is a shortfall of 1680 MW of power. Power cut for a period of 1 hour has been effected in Tamil Nadu except Chennai.
Mettur Project Stage-2 and North Chennai Stage-2 projects are complete and the power stations have started generation.
2 Units of 1000 MW at Vallur and one unit of 600 MW at Mettur have started commercial generation. Koodamkulam Atomic Power station, Vallur 3rd Unit, North Chennai 2 Units will generate 2000 MW of power on a test-run basis. This has helped to counter the failure of other power generation units.
coNorth Chennai Unit 2 (600 MW), Mettur 2nd Unit (210 MW), and Mettur New Unit (600 MW), Ennore 2nd Unit (60 MW), and Neyveli II stage Unit 2 (210 MW) have all been shut down stopping a generation of 1680 MW.This led to power cut on Frids & Saturday in several districts. 1-hour power cut was enforced. This affected the students preparing for exams.
EB officials conducted a meeting. They have ordered to introduce power cut with minimum disturbance during the days and nights.
Tamil Nadu government had provided generator sets for the exam centres during the last 2 years when power shortage was severe. However, they have not provided generator this year. With the board exams starting from Monday, 4th February, instructions have been given to enforce power cut ensuring minimum disturbance.
All the power station authorities have been asked to take all preventive measures to avoid shut-downs. In the event of more shortage, EB authorities have been advised to enforce power cut to the industries without affecting the public.
