Night vigil for Chennai Police today
The Chennai is ready to face any kind of eventualities during the New Year Celebrations. Armed with searchlights and night vision binoculars, apart from other gadgets, they are leaving nothing to chance in their bid to ensure the revelry does not get out of hand.
Commissioner S George ordered the formation of special teams, each led by an assistant commissioner of police, following complaints that the police presence in crowded places is usually inadequate.At least 40 minitrucks carrying a posse of police personnel with night vision binoculars and searchlights will cruise along places where people gather in large numbers, particularly Marina and Elliots beaches. The fact that revellers will be able to see police around them will act as deterrent for trouble makers, a senior police officer said.
In South Chennai, additional commissioner
of police Rajesh Das has formed 30 special squads who will conduct a survey
throughout the area and submit a report.Based on the report, police will come
up with a strategy, including placing barricades in the middle of roads to
check vehicles travelling at high speeds. At least 10,000 police personnel have
been roped in for providing security to the people and to keep noisy revelers
in check.
