Mr. Sundararaj, the Tamil Nadu Minister for handlooms, announced in Ramanathapuram on Wednesday that 3,45,00,000 dhotis and saris will be distributed to the poor before Wednesday.
Out of the 1,72,00,000 pairs of dhotis and
saris planned for procurement for the coming Pongal, the government has already
received 1,52,00,000 pairs.
The delay in procurement is due to the extra
care taken to ensure good quality material. However, the government would
commence distribution before Pongal as part the Chief Minister�s orders.
Tamil Nadu is the leading state in handloom
production. During the year 2012, The handloom products were sold at Rs. 217
Crores. This year, it is expected to be Rs. 246 Crores, retaining the top
position.
