Tamil Nadu Government Announces ₹2 per Kg Incentive for Ration Shop Workers Selling Onions

The Tamil Nadu government has announced an incentive of ₹2 per kilogram for ration shop workers selling onions through cooperative-run fair price shops across the state. The initiative aims to compensate workers for the additional responsibilities involved in handling and selling onions to the public.

According to an order issued by Registrar of Cooperative Societies Latha, the incentive will be calculated based on the quantity of onions sold by each worker.

Onions Sold Through Cooperative Ration Shops

The Tamil Nadu government has procured onions in three phases through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers` Federation of India (NCCF).

The move aims to help control rising onion prices in the open market and ensure that quality onions are available to consumers at affordable rates. The procured onions are being sold through ration shops operated by cooperative societies across Tamil Nadu.

Additional Responsibilities for Ration Shop Workers

Ration shop employees involved in onion sales have been handling several additional duties, including receiving stock, storing onions, sorting them, weighing quantities for customers and maintaining sales records.

Recognising these additional responsibilities, the government has decided to provide an incentive of ₹2 for every kilogram of onions sold by each worker.

Incentive to Be Credited Directly to Bank Accounts

As per the order, the incentive amount will be calculated according to individual sales and credited directly to the workers` bank accounts through the Electronic Clearing Service (ECS).

The initiative is intended to support ration shop workers involved in the distribution of onions while helping cooperative outlets continue supplying essential commodities to consumers at affordable prices.
