SP Balasubrahmanyam Death Anniversary: Remembering the Legendary Singer and His Evergreen Voice

Chennai: September 25 marks the death anniversary of legendary playback singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, fondly known as SPB or Balu. Six years after his passing, his voice continues to remain an unforgettable part of Tamil cinema and the lives of millions of music lovers.

Born on June 4, 1946, in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, SPB developed a passion for music at a young age. Although he initially pursued engineering, his love for singing eventually led him towards the film industry. He made his playback singing debut in 1966 with the Telugu film Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna, beginning a remarkable musical journey that would span more than five decades.

SPB went on to record thousands of songs in several Indian languages, with Tamil becoming one of the most important parts of his illustrious career. His expressive voice and ability to bring emotion to every song made him a favourite among Tamil film audiences.

Tamil cinema gave SPB countless memorable songs. From the soulful "Ilaya Nila Pozhigiradhe" in Payanangal Mudivathillai and the romantic "Mannil Indha Kadhalandri" from Keladi Kanmani to the energetic "Thanga Thamarai" from Minsara Kanavu, his songs have remained popular across generations. His collaborations with composers such as Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman produced many timeless melodies.

SPB was also admired for his extraordinary recording ability. He was recognised by the Guinness World Records for his remarkable contribution to recorded music and achieved several notable recording feats during his career.

His contribution to Indian music earned him numerous honours, including six National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer. He was also awarded the Padma Shri in 2001, Padma Bhushan in 2011, and the Padma Vibhushan posthumously in 2021.

SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away on September 25, 2020, at the age of 74. On his sixth death anniversary, his voice continues to live through the countless songs he left behind. For generations of Tamil music lovers, SPB`s songs are more than melodies - they are memories, emotions and an enduring part of their lives.
