Tamil Nadu Schools Reopen on June 4 for 2026-27 Academic Year; New Curriculum Introduced for Classes 1-3

Schools across Tamil Nadu are set to reopen on June 4, 2026, marking the beginning of the 2026-27 academic year for students from Classes 1 to 12. The reopening, originally scheduled for June 1, was postponed by the State Government due to the intense summer heat and rising temperatures experienced across Tamil Nadu.

To mark the commencement of the new academic year, Tamil Nadu School Education Minister A. Rajmohan will participate in a special event in Chennai. During the programme, the minister will launch the distribution of educational aids to students, inaugurate 21 digital smart boards, present awards to meritorious students, and deliver the inaugural address.

Ahead of the reopening, the Directorate of School Education conducted a three-day State-level orientation programme for elementary school teachers from June 1 to June 3. A special handbook was released and distributed to master trainers, who subsequently trained teachers across the State.

The orientation programme focused primarily on teachers handling Classes 1 to 3, as Tamil Nadu has introduced a revised curriculum for these classes during the current academic year. The updated textbooks for the first term have been printed and are being distributed to students as schools reopen.

The curriculum revision follows the recommendations outlined in the State Education Policy (SEP), which was released in August 2025. The policy aims to strengthen foundational learning and improve the overall quality of school education across Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, work is progressing on revising the syllabus for Classes 4 to 12. Teachers and subject experts from different districts have been brought to Chennai to prepare updated textbooks and learning materials. The syllabus revision process is currently underway for Classes 4 to 10 as well as Higher Secondary Classes 11 and 12.

With schools reopening after the summer vacation, lakhs of students across Tamil Nadu will return to classrooms, beginning a new academic year with updated learning resources and enhanced educational initiatives.
