Rishabh Pant has stepped down as the captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) following the team’s disappointing performance in IPL 2026.
LSG confirmed on May 29 that the franchise accepted Pant’s request to relinquish captaincy duties with immediate effect. The decision comes after Lucknow finished at the bottom of the points table, managing only four wins in 14 matches this season.
Pant was signed by LSG for a massive Rs.27 crore ahead of IPL 2025 and was expected to lead the franchise into a new era. However, under his leadership, the team failed to qualify for the playoffs in both seasons.
As captain, Pant registered:
- 10 wins in 28 matches
- Bottom-place finish in IPL 2026
- Consecutive disappointing seasons for LSG
His individual batting form also dipped during his time with the franchise. Pant scored:
- 269 runs in IPL 2025
- 312 runs in IPL 2026
LSG management stated that the team will now focus on rebuilding ahead of the next season. Potential candidates to replace Pant as captain include Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and Nicholas Pooran.
