The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched a major footpath upgrade project worth Rs 70.37 crore as part of its larger Rs 200 crore pedestrian improvement plan.
The works will cover Zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 13, including areas like Anna Nagar, MMDA Colony, Besant Nagar, Indira Nagar, Kathipara and Sastri Nagar. Both residential streets and key commercial roads are included.
Instead of temporary repairs, the project involves complete reconstruction - removing damaged pavements, laying new base layers, and building durable concrete footpaths with kerbs and safety bollards.
The aim is to fix long-standing issues caused by wear, uneven surfaces, and repeated utility works. All works are expected to be completed within six months from site handover, with more phases planned across other city areas.
