Lighthouse on the Marina beach thrown open to the public
The lighthouse on the Marina beach which was closed following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 was thrown open to public after a gap of 22 years.The 45.72 m tall Madras lighthouse was inaugurated in 1977 by the then Union Shipping Minister G.S. Dhillon.The present Shipping Minster G.K. Vasan today opened the renovated lighthouse, which has a museum dedicated to the history of navigational aids.
 
A viewing gallery with a capacity for 30 people on top of the tower gives a bird�s view of the world�s second largest beach and the city.
 
The lighthouse will be open on all days, except Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 pm and between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
 
In February 2011, Vasan had launched a programme to promote lighthouse tourism. Under this, out of the 180 lighthouses in the country, 15 lighthouses, including Chennai and Mamallapuram, were identified.
