The Election Commission of India has extended the deadline for adding names to the voter list in Tamil Nadu till January 30, according to an announcement made on Monday.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu began on November 4, as part of efforts to update and verify voter records across the state.

Draft Voter List and Deletions

Following the distribution and collection of forms by Booth Level Officers, the draft voter list was published on December 19. In the draft list, 97.38 lakh voters were deleted, reducing the total number of voters in Tamil Nadu from 6,41,14,587 to 5,43,76,756.

Opportunity for Re-Inclusion and New Registration

Individuals whose names were removed from the draft list, as well as citizens who have completed 18 years of age, were given time from December 19 to January 18 to apply for inclusion in the voter list.

As of Sunday evening, around 13 lakh people had submitted applications to add their names to the electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu.

Final Voter List on February 17

In view of the large number of applications, the Election Commission has now extended the deadline till January 30. All applications will be verified, and the final voter list is scheduled to be published on February 17.

The extension is expected to benefit eligible voters who could not apply within the earlier deadline, ensuring wider participation in the democratic process.
