The Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department has released the latest water storage details for Chennai and its surrounding lakes on Tuesday. With Cyclone Ditwah weakening into a deep depression near the Chennai coast, the city and suburbs have been receiving heavy rainfall for the past 24 hours.
According to the report, the six major lakes supplying water to Chennai - with a combined total capacity of 13.22 TMC - currently hold 10.64 TMC of water, a significant increase compared to last year’s 7.96 TMC on the same day.
Current Water Storage (TMC)
Poondi Lake: 3.23 TMC
Red Hills (Puzhal) Lake: 3.30 TMC
Chembarambakkam Lake: 3.65 TMC
Cholavaram Lake: 1.08 TMC
Kannankottai–Thervaikandigai Lake: 0.50 TMC
Veeranam Lake: 1.46 TMC
The increased water levels come as a major relief to Chennai’s drinking water supply system, especially as rainfall continues across the region.
