New Low-Pressure System Likely to Form in 24 Hours: IMD Issues Weather Update

Posted on: 24/Nov/2025 3:21:51 PM

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a new low-pressure area is likely to form within the next 24 hours due to an existing upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Comorin region and nearby areas. The circulation was observed at 5.30 am on Monday (November 24).

Formation of New Weather System

Under the influence of this circulation, the IMD stated that a new low-pressure area is expected to form over:

- Comorin region

- Southwest Bay of Bengal

- Adjoining Sri Lanka

This development is anticipated around November 25.

Another System Strengthening in Bay of Bengal

The IMD also highlighted that the well-marked low-pressure area over the Strait of Malacca & south Andaman Sea is likely to:

- Move west-northwestwards

- Intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal within 24 hours

- Further strengthen into a cyclonic storm in the next 48 hours

Rainfall in Tamil Nadu

Due to the combined influence of these systems:

- Widespread rainfall continued across several districts of Tamil Nadu on Monday.

- Several district administrations declared a holiday for schools and colleges as a precautionary measure.

Chennai Weather Forecast

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC):

- Chennai and suburbs may experience light to moderate rain, with chances of thunderstorms and lightning.

- Strong surface winds of 30–40 km/h are likely in isolated coastal areas today.
