A new low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy rain to several districts in Tamil Nadu. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur, along with Karaikal, are likely to experience heavy rainfall today.
In the past 24 hours, Ayikudi in Tenkasi district recorded 15 cm of rainfall - the highest in the state.
The existing low-pressure system from the southwest Bay of Bengal, along with an upper air cyclonic circulation over the south Andaman Sea, is expected to intensify rain activity. Another low-pressure area may develop tomorrow over the southeast Bay of Bengal, bringing additional rainfall to coastal and interior districts.
