Chennai Corporation to Finalise New Ward Boundaries by December
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will finalise new boundaries for its proposed expansion from 200 to 300 wards, including Vanagaram and Adayalampattu panchayats, by December 2025, according to senior officials.
However, the merger will take effect only in February 2027, when the tenure of the current elected bodies ends, allowing synchronized local body elections for all 300 wards and avoiding administrative hurdles.
With this expansion, GCC’s jurisdiction will cover 442 sq. km and serve an estimated population of 67 lakh. Officials are currently holding meetings with the Revenue Department to measure land, identify revenue sources, and map infrastructure in the two panchayats.
The boundaries must be frozen by December 31, ahead of the population census starting on December 30. Committees and sub-committees will be formed soon to oversee the process.
Meanwhile, Mayor R. Priya announced that the new ₹75-crore GCC council hall will be operational by 2026.
