Work on important parts of the Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway in Tamil Nadu, including the trumpet interchange near Sriperumbudur, is facing major delays. The setbacks are due to unseasonal rains, land acquisition problems, and design changes.

In response to a query in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed that Phase-III of the expressway, from Gudipala to Sriperumbudur, is behind schedule.

Here’s the current progress:

- Gudipala to Walajahpet (Package I): 86.22% complete. Originally planned for May 2024, it is now expected to be finished by October 2025.

- Arakkonam to Kancheepuram (Package III): Only 53.56% completed. Due to land compensation and utility shifting issues, it is now likely to be done by March 2026.

- Kancheepuram to Sriperumbudur (Package IV): 78.11% completed. Delays caused by rain and clearance issues have pushed the deadline to December 2025.

- Trumpet Interchange near Sriperumbudur toll plaza: Just 18.82% completed. Design changes and pipeline relocation have delayed it beyond the August 2025 deadline.

Officials blame persistent rainfall, slow approval for railway bridges, and restrictions from the National Green Tribunal and Supreme Court for these delays.

Once completed, the 262-km expressway will significantly reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai.
