Southern Railway has launched a survey for doubling the railway track between Chengalpattu and Arakkonam via Kancheepuram and Thirumalpur. The project aims to ease rail congestion and enable direct suburban services between Arakkonam and Chengalpattu, eliminating the need for the circular route via Chennai Beach.
The Final Location Survey (FLS) has been approved, and plans include a branching line linking Palur to Paranur bypass. The current single-line section has nine stations, including Reddipalayam, Palur, Walajabad, and Kancheepuram a key freight hub for industrial and agricultural goods.
The doubling is expected to benefit over 10 lakh daily suburban passengers on this busy corridor.
