In response to rising public complaints, Chennai Police Commissioner Arun has issued new guidelines limiting the imposition of traffic fines to five specific violations. The move aims to reduce unnecessary checking and ease traffic congestion caused by police presence on major roads.
Going forward, fines will be imposed only for the following offences:
1. Over-speeding
2. Not wearing a helmet
3. Riding on a one-way street
4. Drunk driving
5. Carrying more than two persons on a two-wheeler
This action comes amid concerns that police personnel were forming groups to stop vehicles and issue fines indiscriminately. The new rule is expected to address complaints of excessive fines and traffic disruptions, while still tackling major causes of road accidents in the city.
