Tamil Nadu Agricultural University predicts rainfall

Posted on: 03/Oct/2013 11:10:14 AM
The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) at Coimbatore had predicted all districts will receive normal or near normal rainfall in the coming North East monsoon.

The study was based on the Southern Oscillation Index and Sea Surface Temperature values using Australian software `Rainman International 4.2`. The predicted rainfall is compared with the average rainfall of each district. Normal rains is calculated out of the average rains of the past rainfall data wherever available or solely from the software. If the rains are expected to be 91-110 percent of the average rains, this is calculated as normal rains. At the same time if it is 81 to 90 percent, they are termed as `near normal` rains.

The report said that normal rainfall is expected in the following districts: Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Chennai, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kanyakumari, The Nilgiris, Salem, Trichy, Tanjore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Karur, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Madurai and Dindigul. Near normal rainfall is expected in districts including Erode, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Virudhunagar, Sivagangai and Theni, as per the study. These predictions have a 60 per cent probability.
