New System Allows Access to Essential Goods Before Receiving Family Cards: Tamil Nadu Government Notification!

The Tamil Nadu government has introduced a new measure to ensure citizens have access to essential commodities even before receiving their family cards. Through fingerprint verification, eligible individuals can now procure essential items from ration shops. This initiative, announced officially, aims to facilitate access to essential goods, particularly rice, through the public distribution scheme`s fair price shops.
Since May 7, 2021, until June 30, 2023, around 15 lakh new family cards have been distributed across the state. However, the distribution of family cards has been temporarily halted to ensure fair distribution of welfare benefits. Efforts are underway to extend new welfare benefits to existing family cardholders during this period.
In flood-affected districts like Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, and Chennai, 27,577 family cards have been issued. Moreover, 45,509 new family cards are currently being issued to eligible applicants after online verification. Applicants are notified via text messages about the availability of new family cards for collection at designated issuing offices.
To ensure uninterrupted access to essential goods, a pre-distribution process has been implemented for new family cards. Eligible cardholders receive details of their family card numbers and fair price shop arrangements via SMS. Before receiving their physical family cards, individuals can provide their card numbers to shopkeepers and undergo fingerprint verification to obtain essential goods from fair price shops.
This innovative approach streamlines the distribution process and ensures timely access to essential commodities for citizens. By leveraging technology and efficient administrative measures, the Tamil Nadu government continues to prioritize the welfare of its citizens, especially during challenging circumstances like natural disasters and administrative transitions.
