On Wednesday, 11TH October 2023, around 1lakh shops and commercial establishments remained closed in the Delta districts belonging to TN. It is known that a total shutdown was announced by the Cauvery Delta Protection Movement to protest against Karnataka government`s failure to adhere to the orders of SC and Cauvery Water Management Authority to release water for irrigation.
On Wednesday, there were both govt as well as private buses functioning as usual plus the educational institutions also functioned without any issue. Barring some incidents of protests, normal life remained unaffected yesterday.
It is noteworthy that the protesting farmers in places like Trichy, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai etc took out rallies and protest in front of union govt offices etc. From 6am till the evening, about 40000 shops in Thanjavur, 35000 shops in Thiruvarur, 20000 shops in Nagapattinam, 15000 in Mayiladuthurai remained closed. It must be noted that in Thanjavur city the protestors demonstrated before the LIC office. There were similar protests in many other places such as Kumbakonam, Pattukottai, Thiruvarur, Mannargudi and Nagapattinam etc yesterday. Police personnel took control and arrested nearly 700 protestors who surrounded the head post office.
