The Integral Coach factory or ICF in Chennai has been manufacturing Vande Bharat or VB trains coaches successfully. By the end of this October month, ICF will unveil a prototype of VB-like non air-conditioned push-pull train. Now, the prototype is undergoing finishing touches.

This VB train prototype would have as many as 22 coaches and it would resemble a VB train in its external appearance. The train would have orange and grey colours replicating the latest VB model. The difference between this prototype VB train and the original VB train would be in comfort and features etc.

It was confirmed by an official from ICF that there would be a locomotive each in front as well as in the rear side. It must be noted that in the conventional trains there would be just one locomotive present in the front to pull the coaches. The locomotive design would also show some changes and greater acceleration and deceleration would be possible. He added that the aerodynamics of the locomotive to be manufactured by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works for the push-pull train has been changed to resemble a VB train.

According to the ICF officer, the train cannot be called a non a/c VB train. He added that the train would be an upgraded 3 tier sleeper version with superb acceleration and deceleration capacity.

Coupling technology used:

One common technology that is used in VB trains as well as this prototype VB train is the coupler. Information is that the non a/c prototype has been developed with the help of SMC or semi permanent couplers.

It is worth mentioning here that the Semi Permanent Couplers used in VB trains would be rigid and would cause fewer jerks when compared to the Linke Hofmann Busch coaches that use relatively flexible Centre Buffer Couplers.

A top official belonging to ICF explained that first getting approval from the Research Design and Standards Organisation or RDSO is important. He added that after getting RDSO approval than RB approval would be obtained and then only commercial production of push-pull train would begin.
