Tamil Nadu Police Seize Over 41,000 kg of Ganja in 17 Months, Intensify Drug-Free TN Initiative

In a significant development towards achieving a drug-free Tamil Nadu, the state police have confiscated a staggering 41,000 kg of ganja in the past 17 months, according to the Enforcement Bureau chief ADGP Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal. This announcement came on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse, observed worldwide on Monday.

The Enforcement Bureau`s statistics reveal that in 2022, the Tamil Nadu police seized 28,384 kg of ganja and filed 10,665 cases against 14,934 individuals. Additionally, half a kilogram of heroin, 63,848 tablets, and 98 kg of other drugs were also confiscated during the same period. From January to May this year, the police seized an additional 12,802 kg of ganja, registered 4,562 cases against 6,262 suspects, and seized 5,835 tablets and 101 kg of other drugs.

The police have also taken stringent financial measures against drug offenders. In 2022, financial investigations were initiated against 118 suspects involved in 67 cases under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. As a result, 33 movable and immovable properties belonging to the accused were seized, and 3,700 bank accounts were frozen. This year, financial investigations have been launched against 36 individuals, leading to the seizure of 12 properties worth Rs 1.15 crore and the freezing of 1,256 bank accounts.
