Humongous increase in the electricity charges for the common area connections in the apartments in Chennai, residents shocked!!

The newly created tariff slab I-D for the common area connection in small apartments by Tangedco has shocked the residents in Chennai. An amount of Rs 8 per unit is now charged.
It must be taken into account that till now the common area connection in the small apartments were charged under the domestic category. As a result, the residents paid less as the first 100 units were free plus there were also other subsidies for the domestic connections.
On the other hand, the bigger apartments with common facilities like swimming pools, sewage treatment plants and multiple elevators etc would be paying less for the common area connections now under the new I-D slab of Tangedco.
From just Rs 890 as electricity charges for the common area of their apartment complexes, the Tambaram apartment residents now pay Rs 3800. This was according to a resident from Tambaram.
In the same manner, a 6 unit apartment block in Perungudi that used to pay just Rs 100 as common area connection is now paying Rs 2520. At Pattabiram, the residents of the apartments pay 4 times electricity charges now for the common area connections.
It was explained by Tangedco that it had converted about 1.7lakh common area connections at apartments from domestic slab to I-D slab and majority of the residents have not been affected by this.The shocking piece of information is that the new slab has affected 17lakhs families and this was brought out by a social activist from Nanganallur in south Chennai.
It was mentioned by Mr. Govindraj, an activist, that the new tariff would affect the middle as well as the lower middle class who would like to own a house in 2 and 3 storied apartments.
