The Tambaram Government Hospital was so far not equipped with equipments to deal with trauma victims brought there from the accident-prone Grand Southern Trunk Road. The only full-fledged government medical facility between Chengalpet and Chennai got a fillip on Monday with the launch of an emergency care unit. Set up under the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP), the unit, inaugurated by minister of health and family welfare K C Veeramani, has three beds, one emergency physician, an advanced emergency medical technician and a regular medical technician. It will be equipped to handle all emergencies with trained doctors and paramedical staff. It is designed to provide immediate care to critical patients and will work round the clock.
The centre is aimed at providing emergency service eto people outside the city who otherwise go all the way to Royapettah Government hospital or the government general hospital
A second such centre is planned at Padianallur near Red Hills shortly.
