What is going to happen for the schools in added areas like Thiruvotriyur, Manali, Valasaravakkam, Sholinganallur etc??

Mayor of Chennai R. Priya grabbed many eyeballs when she mentioned that in 6 months schools present in the added areas in Chennai would be handed over to GCC. Now, the GCC or civic body has been managing as many as 281 schools with 1.1.lakh students. In 6 months,420 schools would be under the control of GCC.

On Tuesday, 30th August 2022, Chennai Corporation Council meeting took place. In the meeting,. Mayor spoke about how GCC would implement projects to improve the infrastructure in the schools. She threw light on the fact that once the schools present in the added areas of Chennai such as Thiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Sholinganallur etc are handed over to the GCC then the number of schools under GCC would go from the current 281 to 420.

Information is that councillors in the wards belonging to the added areas of Chennai have been demanding that the schools in those areas be handed over to GCC. This was mainly to facilitate the infrastructural development in the schools. With funding from multilateral agencies, various projects of developing school infrastructure have been proposed.

Under the Nirbhaya fund, the Chennai Corporation Council has passed a resolution for developing safety toilets for girls studying in various schools belonging to the Chennai Corporation. The proposal `Women`s safety in public places in Chennai` was recommended by the Women`s Safety Division of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

Over a period of 3 years starting 2018-2019, projects of women empowerment, safety and security of women were approved at a total cost of Rs 245crores. Point is that the period has been extended to September 2022.

Under Nirbhaya Funding, the key initiatives in the safe city proposal are

  • Safe-zone clusters in the hot crime zone
  • Surveillance cameras in places with large gatherings
  • Security enablers in public transport
  • E-toilets and sanitation
  • Capacity building and awareness programme
  • Emergency helpline and app services
  • Counselling
  • Cyber cell and legal assistance fund
  • GIS based crime mapping
  • Remote monitoring of street lighting
  • Mobile women police patrol

On 13th January 2022, the state level apex committee gave approval to the project `Safe toilets for GCC schools with girls" one of Nirbhaya`s projects was proposed at an estimated cost of Rs 18.87 crores. It is noteworthy that the work covers 132 middle schools, high schools, higher secondary schools with 20000 girl students in Chennai.
