Soon, the Duraisamy market on the Shanmugam Road would be demolished by the Tambaram Corporation. The market would be rebuilt with facilities for parking etc. Tambaram corporation was founded in 2021 and is the civic body administering Tambaram
It was brought to light by an officer that absence of a parking facility in the location has led to an increase in street parking. This has been creating issues for many traders here and they are stressed. Hence, the Tambaram Corporation has decided to redesign the market.
Many shop owners here were unhappy regarding the Tambaram Corporation`s decision of demolishing the market. They were of the view that their business would get affected badly and want repairing work of damaged shops only. Duraisamy market has meat shops, vegetable shops and shops provided for Burma refugees. It is true that many footpath vendors also use the market for their business. It is learnt that the number of shops that the corporation has been planning to build would not be enough.
According to a vendor it was clear that just repairing of the damaged shops had been requested by them. The corporation has been planning to build around 350 shops only on 4.5 acre land here. It was mentioned by some vendors that the market had more than 1000 shops. From 2020 onwards the lives of many vendors here have been turned upside down due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Now, these vendors have recovered from the pandemic and demolishing the entire Duraisamy market would lead to issues for them. Vendors have been paying rent for their shops even during the Coronavirus pandemic and they want the corporation to consider this. The vendors want the corporation to rethink about demolishing the entire market. The corporation officials have mentioned that talks would be held with the vendors before they proceed as per the plan.
