Roads to be laid in extended areas of Chennai but when??

Posted on: 14/Jul/2022 10:10:06 AM
It seems that more time would be taken to get roads laid in the extended areas belonging to Chennai now. The reason for the delay is because of the fact that the service departments have taken up work in Chennai city.

The Storm Water Drain or SWD underground sewage works are currently going on in places like Nerkundram belonging to Valsarawakkam zone and Chinna Sekkadu belonging to Manali zone. This would delay the road laying works in these places. Bad roads present in these places pose a serious issue for many residents is known.

As per a resident of Chinna Sekkadu it was clear that it is one of the most ignored places in Chennai and roads were not laid for more than 8 years now. He added that earlier Chinna Sekkadu came under the Madhavaram zone. It was mentioned by the councillor as well by some GCC officials that roads would be laid only after the completion of SWD works in 2023. He then spoke about how GCC must have started the road laying work ahead. He concluded that the residents here would have to suffer from bad roads in the coming monsoon season too.

Only for the welfare of the residents, the corporation has undertaken the SWD works. This was mentioned by A. Theerthi, councillor of the locality. It is true that if roads were laid before the completion of SWD works then the roads would have to be dug out immediately for the SWD works. This would pose a huge issue.  For more than 5 years, roads have not been laid in CDN Nagar, Patel Road, Abirami Nagar, P. H Road near Mogappair east new bridge, Madhakoil street, Muniyappan Nagar, Valliammai Nagar Main Road in Nerkundram and Valasaravakkam etc.

It is learnt that even in those places where drainage work has been completed road laying work hasn`t yet started. The reason for that was that the Metro water department would be beginning their work in these places.  Sanctioned in the year 2018 itself, these projects are starting now only.

It was later brought to light by some Chennai corporation officials that for laying 1700 roads at a cost of Rs 200 crores they were in the final stages of DPR preparation. Information is that the corporation would be focusing on laying roads in the extended areas. It is learnt that laying roads before the monsoon season might not be possible.
